While the world elite of surfing just wrapped up day 7 of the Reef Hawaiian Pro 2009 the crowds poured into Honolua Bay to surf a small NNW swell pushing into the Bay. The swell always arrives with a delay on Maui due to its postion in the swell direction. Today we had some visitors arriving in a nice boat camping out for a while.
Reef Hawaiian Pro 2009 Update
After several lay days the Reef at Ali’i beach park got hit with a NNW Swell, nothing significant, the sets were at about 2-3feet. It was impressive to watch Sunny Garcia surfing the set waves of the heat. He is just returning to the contest circuit after several years of absents. At alsmost 40 years of age he absolutely torn the waves appart showing youngsters how it is done. He won Heat #13 easaly with one of the highest scores of the day.
Lahainas own Clay Marzo showed some real technically advanced moves like one of his signature FS 540 hands free sticking it perfect. Two of his great moves brought him easy to the next round. Another Lahaina local, Granger Larsen, also won his heat and advanced to the next round.
Lahaina Talent
We are also looking forward to have Germany’s First ASP Surfer ever to see compete in the next heat. (Hopefully tomorrow if swell permitting). He will be competing in Heat #15 in Round of 96 against Royden Bryson from South Africa, Ruben Gonzalez from Portugal and Torrey Meister from Hawaii.
