Last weekend was the second annual Lahaina Harbor Stand Up Paddle Surfing Contest: The Lahaina Hana Ho’opihoihoi. As a fan and participant of the sport off course I had to be part of the action so I signed up last minute for the contest and to support local contest like this we also sponsored a longboard as a price. It seemed to make sense to choose our „Kaimana“ model as this one like no other board of ours stands for playing in the ocean. The artwork by Sonni Hönscheid, a SUP Athlete and Surfer herself makes the board a perfect choice even if you just like the board for the artwork, so it was the obvious choice.

The contest was tons of fun and many people of all ages showed up to have fun in the perfect waves right at the harbor entrance in Lahaina. Since this is Maui, if you hold a local contest you have many of the worlds best Stand Up Paddlers showing up, like Connor Baxter, Zane Schweitzer or Kody Kerbox, but it was not one of these high profile paddlers who actually won the contest. The winner was Noah Yap, a local über-talent, so if you are into SUP I say you better remember his name as I am sure he will tour the world very soon side by side with all the other well known Maui boys.

Dieses Wochenende war wieder einmal Surfen (Wellenreiten) angesagt. Die Wellen konnten zum zweiten Lahaina Harbor Stand Up Paddle Surfing Contest nicht besser sein. Da ich selber auch ein leidenschaftlicher Surfer bin, egal ob mit oder ohne Paddel, musste ich natürlich auch dabei sein. Dazu sponserten wir mit JUCKER HAWAII noch einen Preis für den Gewinner. Unser „Kaimana“ Longboard schien die richtige Wahl als Preis für einen SUP Surf Contest, denn keines unserer Boards steht unsere Leidenschaft zum Wasser näher als das „Kaimana“. Immerhin ist ja auch das Design von Sonni Hönscheid, welche selber eine leidenschaftliche SUP Athletin uns Surferin ist.

Wenn auf Maui ein kleiner Lokaler Contest ausgerufen wird, wird dieser Contest flux zum Aufmarsch der Internationalen SUP-Stars. So war dieses Wochenende unter den gut 40 SUP Surfern auch Connor Baxter, Kody Kerbox und Zane Schweitzer mit dabei. Dazu auch noch Kai Lenny jüngerer Bruder Ridge welcher ebenfalls Ambitionen hat für eine grosse SUP Zukunft. Die Überraschung war dann aber perfekt, als eben nicht ein SUP Star der Stand Up World Series auf dem Podest stand sondern der noch weniger bekannte Noah Yap. Noah hatte noch nicht viele Auftritte im internationalen SUP Geschehen, wir schlagen aber vor, dass ihr euch diesen Namen schon mal vormerkt. Es gibt nicht viele die besser auf der Welle sind als Zane Schweitzer. Noah gewann den Contest verdient mit vielen Airs und radikalen Manövern.
