We are going to feature Erik Abel on one of our boards for a good cause. – Wir präsentieren Erik Abel auf einem unsere neuen Boards und sammeln für einen guten Zweck

I am super stoked to announce that we teamed up with Surf Artist Erik Abel (@abelarts). I have always been inspired by Eriks style with his fresh approach to surf and tribal art. Erik Abel had his 2nd exposure this year at the Reef Hawaiian Pro in Hale’iwa where the entire artwork for the Event came from his creative mind. Erik is not only known in the surfing world but also in the skateboard world, he had a feature in Concrete Wave Magazine back in 2013 where I have seen his art for the first time. That is when I knew I would like his artwork on our boards some day. Earlier in 2014 I contacted Erik with my proposition to create an artwork for a deck. At the same time I was talking to a local environmental organization to which I wanted to dedicate the board to and raise money and awareness for all the good things they done in the past and are continuing to do. We can’t reveal more details at this point as things are still in the works.

Anyway… Erik Abel was in Hale’iwa last weekend as a newly featured artist at the Wyland Gallery. I had to take the opportunity to fly out to Oahu to meet Erik and his wife. Off course I also had  to check out what was going on with the ever so famous Pipe Masters the worlds most regarded surf contest. (The North Shore of Oahu always holds a special place in my heart as I met my wife there and got married there a few years later.) As I was underway, I heard that the contest was called off for the day. Nevertheless, I wanted to go see Pipeline anyway, as I have not seen this wave on a large swell in several years. The crowds at the Ehukai Baech Park were massive and so was traffic, so I parked my car ways from the beach park and decided to walk. What I saw was unbelievable: The waves were massive, it was like buildings collapsing right off the beach. Guys were getting unbelievable waves and I witnessed some heavy wipe outs. On thing is for sure: If you are a surf enthusiast this is a must see once a live time.

I took hundreds of pictures and forgot why I actually came to the North Shore… it was time the head back to Hale’iwa and finally meet Erik. The art night was great and it was a real pleasure to meet Erik and Nellie Abel, we took some pictures and did some short interviews for future promos.

I can’t wait to reveal the entire story in the coming months…

Es freut mich sehr Euch mitzuteilen, dass wir in 2015 mit dem Künster Erik Abel zusammen arbeiten werden. Erik Abel ist mit seiner Kunst bekannt in der internationalen Surf- und Skateszene. Er hatte dieses Jahr zum 2. Mal die Möglichkeit das Poster für das „Reef Hawaiian Pro“ in Hale’iwa zu gestalten. Auch im „Concrete Wave Magazine“ wurde Erik schon gezeigt und hatte sogar das Titelblatt vor einem Jahr.

Mich inspirierte sein Stiel von Anfang an und ich wusste, dass ich eines Tages ein Longboard mit seiner Kunst herausbringen möchte. Mitte dieses Jahres war es dann soweit, ich kontaktierte Erik und wir hatten ein nettes Gespräch. Wir wollten ein Design machen mit welchem wir auch etwas für die Umwelt auf Hawaii tun können, denn ich wollte das Brett einer Lokalen Umweltorganisation widmen und Geld sammeln für deren Tun. Mehr Details werden bald bekannt werden.

Erik war dieses Wochenende auf Oahu mit seiner Frau für eine Vernissage in der renommierten „Wyland“ Galerie in Hale’iwa an Oahus’ North Shore. Es war also unbedingt Zeit für mich Erik und Nellie Abel persönlich kennen zu lernen. So entschloss ich mich eine kleine Reise zur Nachbarinsel zu unternehmen. Bevor ich zur Galerie ging musste ich aber noch einen Ort meiner Erinnerung besuchen, denn ich habe an der North Shore von Oahu meine Frau kennengelernt und sie dort auch ein paar Jahre später geheiratet. Die weltbekannten „Pipe Masters“ waren gerade am Laufen und ich musste unbedingt noch kurz am Strand vorbei wo ich so viel Zeit verbrachte. Der Contest wurde aber Mitte des Tages abgebrochen und auf weiteres verschoben. Die Wellen waren aber immer noch da und ich erlebte ein Spektakel wie ich es seit Jahren nicht mehr gesehen habe. Die Wellen waren ohne Scheiss, mehrere Stockwerke hoch und entluden sich auf dem Riff keine 200 Meter vor dem Strand. Die Luft vibrierte als die Wellen auf dem Riff „detonierten“. Ich machte viele Bilder und vergaß dabei ganz die Zeit. Allen Surfenthusiasten unter Euch kann ich nur sagen, dass ihr das einmal im Leben gesehen haben müsst.

Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang musste ich nun eiligst zur Galerie fahren um „meinen“ Künstler zu treffen. Der Empfang in der Galerie war sehr herzlich und wir freuten uns nach so vielen Telefonaten endlich auch mal die Hände zu schütteln. Wir machten ein paar Bilder und Interviews für unsere kommende Promo.
